The Story
Curtis Haaland is a knife maker who lives in the mountains of East Tennessee with his wife Abby and their son Oliver. Raised in a family of artists, he developed an appreciation for working with his hands from a young age and spent much of his childhood surrounded by arts and crafts.
His introduction to knife making began in high school when his father suggested they try making knives together. They started working in a small shed in their backyard, using simple tools and a makeshift forge. At the age of 17, Haaland forged his first blade from mild steel, an experience that sparked his passion for the craft.
Haaland approaches knife making as both a functional craft and an artistic pursuit. He designs his knives with practical use in mind while also focusing on unique design elements. Each stage of the process, including designing, forging, grinding, and handle making, is carried out with attention to detail and intention.
He continually experiments with different steels, Damascus patterns, and materials such as wood, always seeking to improve with each knife he creates. Every knife he produces is paired with a handmade leather sheath, which is included with each purchase. Haaland expresses gratitude to those who support his work, which allows him to continue making knives and providing for his family.
